HEADTEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS SHOULD CONTINUE TO TEACH…. BUT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

Much as i believe that headteachers should teach, the tendency to overload the headteacher with workload of teaching is not helpful to any school.
Whenever i see a head teacher that is overloaded with teaching, i suspect one of three things;

1.The lack of understanding of the roles of the headteacher.

  1. Lack of adequate teachers to take subjects
    or
  2. The intention of the school owner to squeeze more than sweat from the headteacher so he can more than justify the salary which is being paid to him/her.

We have seen and even experienced some of these scenarios explained above.

In my view the headteacher needs to keep teaching few periods, strategically decided and in her area of competence.

This is so as to

1.Fiil such gaps for the school.

2. Allow the learners to benefit from the rich experience of the headteacher and

3. Most importantly; showcase best practices to the teachers he or she leads in the school.

Those are in my view some of the real reasons for engaging the headteacher in actual teaching in the classroom.

I taught many subjects as a headteacher for one or more of the reasons stated above.

Endeavour to do things for the right reasons as school owners so you can get maximum results without bruising or damaging your personnel; (your headteachers and teachers)

  1. I quite agree. Best practice should allow time for adequate reflection on the part of the headteacher as well as the teachers. However, if their whole day, including after school hours, is taken up by school issues, we might just end up getting recycled ideas rather innovative ones from these life builders.
